Twelve major wars over three centuries. Catherine the Great's wars (1768–74, 1787–92) took Crimea. The war of 1877–78 freed Bulgaria and brought the Ottoman Empire to the verge of collapse — the 'Eastern Question' that would help ignite WWI.
