Fifteen years of sectarian warfare that destroyed the Paris of the Middle East. The 1982 Israeli invasion, the Sabra and Shatila massacre, the Marine barracks bombing (1983), the emergence of Hezbollah. The Taif Agreement (1989) ended it; the sectarian system it preserved survives.
