Mass protests and strikes broke the Shah's regime in a year. Khomeini returned from Paris on 1 February 1979; the Islamic Republic was proclaimed in April. The US embassy hostage crisis (Nov 1979–Jan 1981) defined US–Iran relations for a generation.
