Within fifty years every major palace society of the eastern Mediterranean was sacked or abandoned — Hattusa, Ugarit, Mycenae, Knossos. Only Egypt under Ramesses III repelled the Sea Peoples at the Battle of the Delta (1175 BC). Literacy was lost in Greece for four centuries.
