Nabopolassar broke free of Assyria; Cyaxares of Media joined him. In 612 BC they took Nineveh and burned it. Nebuchadnezzar II completed the empire, crushing Egypt at Carchemish (605 BC) and taking Jerusalem in 586. Fell to Cyrus of Persia in 539.
