Anti-foreign uprising backed by the Empress Dowager Cixi. The 55-day siege of the legation quarter in Beijing ended when an eight-nation expedition (Britain, France, Russia, Germany, US, Italy, Austria-Hungary, Japan) relieved it and sacked the city.
