Twenty-seven years of guerrilla war in the Deccan. Aurangzeb captured and tortured Sambhaji to death, but the Marathas only grew. By Aurangzeb's death the Mughal treasury was empty; within fifty years the Marathas were the dominant power on the subcontinent.
