US forces took Mexico City in 1847. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo transferred half of Mexico's territory — California, Nevada, Utah, most of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado — to the US for $15 million. Ulysses S. Grant later called it 'one of the most unjust' wars ever waged.
