First Chechen War

1994–1996 Caucasus Status: ended Casualties: ~80,000+

Yeltsin's invasion to crush Chechen independence ended in humiliation. The Battle of Grozny (1994–95) destroyed the city; Maskhadov's raid on Pervomayskoye and the 1996 Khasavyurt Accord granted de facto independence. The second war (1999–2009) reversed all of it.
