Withdrawal of Amaterasu

700 BC Takamagahara Status: ended Casualties: A weaving-maiden killed by Susanoo's flayed horse

Susanoo, raging, broke the rice-paddy walls and flung a flayed horse through the roof of the heavenly weaving-hall, killing a maiden. Amaterasu, the sun, hid herself in the cave Ame-no-Iwato; the world fell into darkness. The kami gathered: Ame-no-Uzume's bawdy dance, the laughter of the eight million, the mirror outside the cave — and when curiosity drew Amaterasu out, the rope was sealed behind her. Kojiki I.
