Eight years of brutal counterinsurgency and urban terror. The Battle of Algiers, systematic torture, the Évian Accords (March 1962), and the flight of nearly a million pieds-noirs. The trauma reshaped both French politics (de Gaulle's Fifth Republic) and Algerian society.
